Sometimes, I get caught up in the hype. Admittedly, I buy pots of $100 moisturizing cream looking for the transformative “hope in a jar” to improve the external. But when I am feeling disconnected with myself, I know it is time to put down the lipstick, hang up my stilettos and look to where my real power resides – within.

It is important to strike a balance between the external and internal.  This is sage advice from someone who has been in the fashion industry for almost 25 years. No matter how many beautiful faces cross my path, I maintain that true beauty comes from the energy exuded from your soul.  I could wax poetic on what the “soul” is but for the purposes of this blog, I will keep it simple. The soul is the essence within you beyond the emotions of the personality. It is your deepest wisdom and highest core spirit.  I believe that it is the energy that lives on regardless of the state of your body.

And in order to exude your soul’s beauty, you have to be connected to your soul. A simple way to start connecting within is through meditation.  Meditation may seem like a daunting task but it is just the act of getting quiet and actively listening within. Prayer, in contrast, is actively sharing with a higher power. So, to start the process of connecting to your inner self, get comfortable so that you can get quiet. You don’t have to be Gandhi in a full lotus pose – just sit in a way your body can completely relax.  Close your eyes and breathe deeply from the diaphragm. I like to start with 3 deep breaths in and out before I let my body softly return to normal breathing.  With your eyes closed, allow the thoughts to flow and out of your mind until you gently nudge it to emptiness.  Focus on your breath if you can’t stop the thoughts. And listen.  If you do this daily, it will change your life. All sorts of juicy inspiration will be there that you could not connect with previously in the busyness of life.

Post your experiences, thoughts and anything else you would like to share. I will share more tools to connecting to your beautiful soul next time.  So, stay tuned…

Beauty is Energy

True beauty comes from the energy exuded by the soul. That is a lesson I have learned experientially over the last two decades on modeling sets. In the fashion and beauty industries, I have been around what our society deems as the most coveted external looks, so valuable the possessor commands thousands of dollars a day by way of compensation. But for some women, a magical transformation of beauty birthed from the soul takes place that is rarely discussed because of its ethereal nature and the degree of difficulty in understanding its origin.  How can one understand the essence of the soul, much less its beauty? But if one is willing to look deeply, being around tens of thousands of beautiful women over decades is an atmosphere replete with lessons on the nature of beauty.

Models are often asked to come onto set with clean hair and face in order for make-up artists and hair stylists to begin their transformation.  It is certainly true that some women walk in off the street and sit in the make-up chair with a basic foundation of beauty: symmetry, good skin and nice teeth. But I have witnessed a phenomenon time and again on set when a woman is able to turn on a charismatic energy in front of the camera that is undeniably magic.  She is able to share the energy of her very soul and it is completely captivating. Admittedly, this girl-next-door I initially met was pretty, but nothing like the goddess before my eyes.

Have you ever met someone and as you got to know him or her, he or she became more and more attractive? Conversely, an initially appealing person can become less desirable if their personality encompasses negative qualities – like behaving narcissistically, selfishly or cruelly. No amount of expensive lotions or make-up will ever have impact on the bottom-line beauty the way a beautiful soul shines.

So, what makes up a beautiful soul? How do I know I have one? And how can I share mine? I will delve into those answers in my upcoming blogs as I explore the nature of beauty from an insider’s point of view.  Stay tuned…
